Educating, Encouraging and Empowering Women in Indonesia’s Villages

In Indonesia, one in nine women were married before they turned 18, according to Unicef. Although efforts to create awareness on the issue has led to a modest decline in numbers, girls, especially those in rural areas, remain vulnerable. Child marriage not only robs children of their childhood, it also threatens girls’ lives, adolescent pregnancies carry more health risks, according to the World Health Organization. Girls who marry before they are 18 are also four times less likely to go beyond high school education, and more likely to experience domestic violence.

KPS2K, an NGO in Indonesia, is addressing this through its programme Sekolah Perempuan, which educates rural women and girls on gender inequality, and helps them develop the skills needed to advocate for their rights.
