Many animals possess strength that even the strongest humans could only dream about. In today’s video we will be looking at the top 10 strongest predators in the wild. The animal coming in at Number 10 will blow your mind out of this world, so be sure to stick around until the end.
Number 1 Tiger As the largest member of the cat family, tigers are strong, powerful and one of nature’s most feared predators. Their beautiful orange and black striped coats provide camouflage when hunting preys at night, they can reach speeds of 65 km/hr. Tigers are powerful apex predators that are at the top of the food chain and capable of killing animals over twice their size. They are nocturnal hunters and will travel many miles to prey on a variety of animals including deer, buffalo and wild boar; native ungulates are their favorite. Not wanting to waste food, remains of large kills may be dragged to a thicket and loosely buried with leaves, ready to be returned to later. Number 2 Lion Lions are the only big cats to live in groups, called prides. Prides are close family groups. They work together to defend territory and hunt. The females in the pride tend to do the majority of the hunting. They work as a group and use intelligent hunting tactics to catch prey which they would not be able to catch alone as they are faster than them. Lions enjoy relaxing and lazing around. They spend between 16 and 20 hours each day resting and sleeping. They have few sweat glands so they wisely tend to conserve their energy by resting during the day and become more active at night when it is cooler. Lions roar to communicate their position to other prides. A lion’s roar is the loudest of any big cat and can be heard up to 8 km away. Lions have terrific night vision. They are 6 times more sensitive to light than humans. This gives them a distinct advantage over some prey species when hunting at night.
Number 3 Jaguar The word 'jaguar' comes from the indigenous word 'yaguar', which means 'he who kills with one leap'. Unlike many domestic cats, jaguars don’t avoid water. They often live near lakes, rivers and wetlands, and are confident swimmers, known to cross large rivers. The jaguar is the third biggest cat in the world after the tiger and the lion and is the largest cat in the Americas. They can grow up to 170cm long, not including their impressive tails which can be up to 80cm. Jaguars have a more powerful bite than any other big cat. Their teeth are strong enough to bite through the thick hides of crocodilians and the hard shells of turtles. They need powerful teeth and jaws to take down prey three to four times their own weight - usually killing it with a bite to the back of the skull rather than biting the neck or throat like other big cats. Jaguars are opportunistic hunters and can prey upon almost anything they come across. Deer, iguanas , fish, birds and monkeys are just some of the prey that jaguars eat.
