Rohan Ramblings 69: in which Gryfflet is asked to defend a lady's honour

Gryfflet has been passing the time in Stoke pondering why there are piles of supplies just left in the middle of the road, trying to muster some enthusiasm for what seems like an impossible search. He sets off nonetheless and manages to locate some apparent clues—which seem pretty thin—while answering a Lore Question, until he is accosted by a small child with some real information which he takes to Reeve Fríthild. She sends him off to the nearby towns of Oserley and Torsbury to summon aid, and to see if further clues can be found. Pausing only to check on some oblivious farmers, he arrives in Oserley which seems excessively overgrown, which disturbs Gryfflet only slightly less than discovering that their Mead Hall lacks the usual fire-pit to keep it warm. However Thane Ordlac seems cooperative enough, asking only that Gryfflet deal with some nearby brigands while he mobilises his troops, which seems simple enough until a mysterious Note shows up which causes consternation back in Oserley. Ordlac's lieutenant Cenulf sends Gryfflet to harry the half-orcs which ride about the environs, which is handy because it ties in with Reeve Fríthild's investigations. The ensuing session of mounted combat allows for sufficient Lore Discussion to exhaust our supply thereof, following which Gryfflet returns to Oserley with some more clues which suggest a plot to kill Ordlac's wife. Ordlac's response is to hire Gryfflet to guard said wife in her own home where she is revealed to be profoundly unhappy: she asks Gryfflet to defend her honour as well as her life. The latter is easy enough, since the brigands break in even though the doors and windows were supposed to be secure: the former will have to wait until Gryfflet meets with her true love. It turns out that the miscreants were armed with a poisoned dagger, so Gryfflet is sent to deal with the supposed creator and also with the slugs who secrete the poison. The tedium of trawling around the swamp in search of appropriate targets is relieved by someone posing another Lore Question, and our suspicions are roused by the somewhat lacklustre reaction to Gryfflet's safe return. There is just enough time for the Professor to announce the latest news of this year's Mythmoot conference before the session concludes.
"Those two are more than joined at the hip!"
"You deserve all kinds of credit!"
"That'll be…disturbing!"
"Ooooh! That's where I'm not going…yet!"
"This is the Mead Hall! It's adorable!"
"I'm sorry, I'll come in again!"
"You won't stay still and fight me like a polite person, will you?"
"Strong work there, Gryfflet, but don't mess with the deer!"
"Good thing this is not at all tedious!"
"That one is insufficiently lovely!"
"Attacking slugs from horseback is perfectly ridiculous!"
Lore discussed this week included whether Sam was the only member of the Fellowship to carry a pack, whether the "Northern Courage" to which JRRT referred was the same as that of the Spartans, whether the kingdoms of Middle-earth had clearly demarcated borders, and whether the Shire had a literacy programme. The Professor also updated us on his progress through the work of HP Lovecraft.
