Gondor Gambolling 39: In Which Gryfflet Suffers From a Surfeit of Slugs

Gryfflet has been hanging out in the culverts beneath the city of Osgiliath with Rangers Mablung and Damrod, suffering from a bad case of costume envy. He consoles himself with the possibility of acquiring an even more magnificent outfit in the future. He collects himself and sets out to complete his errands around the city, starting with recovering supplies for yet more Rangers. This turns out to rather easier than expected which allows us to address our list of Lore Questions as he wanders the city. We continue our discussion as he defeats half-trolls and orcs (and the occasional rat), burns rafts, and scavenges more weapons, finally arriving at the Great Bridge where he is overjoyed to meet a Mûmak. We manage to persuade him that it is well out of his league and to concentrate on his actual target, so he survives to return to the culverts and report in. This accomplished he is ready to assault the Sunken Labyrinth in search of the missing Faramir, which takes the rest of the session: pulling levers, slaughtering slugs, and pulling more levers. He is amused to remake the acquaintance of Muzgásh and Dagron, previously encountered at Barad Nemorn. It turns out that by escaping they did not in fact make life any easier for themselves, since they are now abominations in the service of Sauron. Gryfflet puts them out of their misery—eventually—but fails to confront a mystery man, dressed somewhat like a Ranger, who flees into the darkness. Could this be Faramir? We shall continue the search next session.

"And now I went the wrong way! Give me the rats, for crying out loud!"
"I guess I'll just kill everybody, maybe that'll help?"
"Stay cute, culvert rat, stay cute!"
Lore this week was relatively scarce given the time we spent in the Sunken Labyrinth, but we did manage to discuss the questions of Númenórean beards and racial diversity in Middle-earth, with diversions into publishing rights and JRRT's world-building.
