Virtual Overland Expo Summer 2020- Ubuntu: One Woman’s Motorcycle Odyssey Across Africa
Welcome to Ubuntu: One Woman’s Motorcycle Odyssey Across Africa at Virtual Overland Expo Summer! Renowned motorcycle adventurer tells her story of crossing Africa in the 90's.
The idea to ride a motorcycle across Africa came to Heather Ellis while working at a remote mine in northern Australia. Even though she had never done any long-distance motorcycle travel before, the idea felt just right. What unfolded as she rode her Yamaha TT600 from south to north Africa for 42,000 kilometers over 15 months, was a journey not only filled with survival-against-the-odds adventures, but also a deeply spiritual experience of personal growth where she finds ubuntu, the universal bond that connects all of humanity as one. Heather’s travels took her to the dizzying heights of Mt Kilimanjaro and the Rwenzori Mountains, to the deserts of northern Kenya where she was befriended by armed bandits, to a voyage on a ‘floating village’ on the mighty Zaire River. Everywhere she went Heather was aided by locals and travelers alike, who took her into their homes and hearts, helping her to truly understand the spirit of ubuntu—a Bantu word meaning ‘I am because we are’.
Australian motorcycle adventurer and author, Heather Ellis has traveled across Africa, Europe and Central Asia on her Yamaha TT600. She learned to ride motorcycles while living on a sheep station in outback Australia, the same riding conditions she encountered twenty years later in Africa. After Africa, Heather worked as a London motorcycle courier (it was all part of the journey), then packed her TT600 to ride the ancient Silk Roads of Central Asia to Vietnam. Heather Ellis is the author of Ubuntu: One Woman’s Motorcycle Odyssey Across Africa and Timeless On The Silk Road. She and her three teenage boys live near Melbourne, Australia, in the Yarra Ranges where some of the world’s best motorcycling roads are on her
doorstep. While writing her next book, Heather works in communications and is often seen riding her Triumph Thruxton through the ‘twisties’. And as for her trusty Yamaha TT600? He waits patiently in her garage for their next adventure: the Americas.
