🐬 Dolphin Money Box from the Algarve.
This glossy blue dolphin with the name written on the side (“Algarve”) is a classic Portuguese tourist piece.
What it is:
A glazed ceramic money box, very likely hand-finished.
Sold widely in seaside resorts across the Algarve.
The painted name is a big clue—it was made specifically as a holiday souvenir
Age & origin:
Most commonly produced from the late 1980s through the 2000s
It was most likely made in Portugal, though some were imported blanks and hand-decorated locally
Style notes:
Soft pastel glaze, cartoon-like face, and blush cheeks = very typical “gift shop cute” aesthetic
Dolphins were (and still are) hugely popular in coastal tourist art
Value (rough guide):
Usually around £5–£12
More sentimental than rare—but very collectible if you like travel souvenirs.
🐶 Dog in Kennel Money Box (bought in Cyprus, in December 2004)
This one’s especially sweet—and the date helps a lot.
What it is:
A novelty money box featuring a spotted puppy (Dalmatian-style) sleeping in a kennel marked “HOME”
It is likely made from resin rather than ceramic (common for this type).
Origin:
Bought in Cyprus, and very typical of Mediterranean tourist giftware
These were widely sold in the early 2000s in holiday shops.
Age:
The 2004 purchase date fits perfectly—this style was everywhere around that time.
Design clues:
Bright primary colours (yellow, red roof)
Cute “sleeping pet” theme—very popular for children’s gifts.
The little food bowl detail is a nice touch and fairly typical of mass-produced novelty pieces.
Value (rough guide):
Around £6–£15 depending on its condition and if it has the original box.
Again, it's not rare—but charming and very display-friendly

But here’s the thing—they’re exactly the kind of pieces people love collecting now because:

And no two collections are ever quite the same. I have to thank the original owner. She had to let it go, but she will always be able to watch the video and remember that fabulous Greek holiday and the lovely spotty dog, with his very comfortable house, that she brought back from Greece.
