Demonstrators were seen holding signs reading 'Stop the global security bill' and 'Our videos against your violence.'
Sebastien, a member of the Yellow Vest movement, condemned the bill, saying that "lawyers have managed to free Yellow Vests, or citizens thanks to videos posted on social networks to prove that the Yellow Vests had done nothing (were innocent). Today, banning the filming and broadcasting of images of the police is scandalous."
The rally later escalated into clashes, with police firing water cannons at protesters to disperse them.
The 'global security' bill, approved on Friday evening by the French National Assembly, makes it illegal to disseminate images in which police officers or gendarmes can be personally identified, and has been heavily criticised by activists and journalists, who state it would present a danger to press freedom. The bill now has to be approved by the Senate.
SOT, Sebastien,Yellow Vest (French): "Lawyers have managed to free Yellow Vests, or citizens thanks to videos posted on social networks to prove that the Yellow Vests had done nothing (were innocent). Today, banning the filming and broadcasting of images of the police is scandalous".
C/U Protester holding sign reading (French): 'No proof, no crime! Remember their names'
M/S Protester holding sign reading (French): 'Police state =/= state of law'
SOT, Berengere, Protester (French): "I don't understand why they (the government) are working on global security without working on citizen security. Today they are just going to strengthen the rights of the police, it is madness if we ever wonder how it actually protects citizens."
SOT, Michel, Member of the SNJ (National Union of Journalists) (French): "This law is a shame, I am ashamed for my country. This text, this bill is just a law that destroys freedom."
