MOMBASA VS TANGA: BATTLE FOR DANGOTE’S NEXT MEGA REFINERY
East Africa’s proposed mega refinery is becoming one of the most important industrial stories on the continent.
Aliko Dangote, the Nigerian businessman behind the giant Dangote Refinery in Lagos, is now looking seriously at East Africa for his next major refining project. At first, the project appeared to favour Tanga in Tanzania, where regional leaders discussed a refinery that could serve Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
But the story has taken a dramatic turn.
Reports now suggest Dangote may be leaning towards Mombasa, Kenya, citing port advantages, market size and stronger commercial prospects. Tanzania, however, is still very much in the race, with President Samia Suluhu Hassan reportedly engaging Dangote as the competition deepens.
This WestAfrica.News report examines the bigger issue behind the refinery saga: who controls the future of fuel supply in one of Africa’s fastest-growing regions?
Is this simply a business decision — or the beginning of a new contest for energy power in East Africa?
Watch, like, share and subscribe for more incisive and fresh perspectives on Africa, the diaspora and the changing world economy.
