The trulli until 1870 were not the object of research and study: only from the second half of the 19th century did the first studies begin and the first theories concerning their origin and construction were formulated. In particular, the origin of the trullo buildings in the core of Alberobello is the subject of research and debate.

It is however possible to recognize in the trullo form the classic scheme of the Mycenaean tholos tomb of the Treasury of Atreus, datable between 1500 and 1250 BC.
This type of construction is, in a more or less primitive form, found in various parts of the world and in particular in European countries and in the Mediterranean area. Although an indigenous origin cannot be excluded, most scholars agree that the architecture of the trullo came from the Near East.

The different locations in which similar construction types are found share the same tectonic and stratigraphic arrangement of the terrain, which makes available the particular type of stone necessary for the construction of these dry structures.

The Pelasgic peoples (Hellenes of the 1st millennium BC), Messapians, Phoenicians (1200 BC) in the course of prehistory also landed numerous in Puglia, crossing or occupying it, building both megalithic structures (such as dolmens and menhirs) and microlithic structures, such as mirrors and trulli .

However, there is no evidence of millenary trulli (inscriptions, epigraphs or marks) and the oldest examples can be dated to the end of the 17th century, in the simple form of the country trullo, not exclusive to the Murgia dei Trulli.
The local soil easily supplied the building material, thanks to the calcareous subsoil made up, on the surface, of thin layers; in fact, the trulli are rare where the geology of the land is not made up of stratified limestone.

The primitive Apulian trulli were built by farmers and shepherds with the stones collected on the spot, in the farms themselves. Consisting of a single room, they were used as a temporary shelter or as a deposit for agricultural tools. Over time, the shape underwent a slow evolution, arriving at houses with several rooms, consisting of a main room, plus other smaller perimeter rooms such as alcoves.

The spread of the trulli was caused by the fractionation of the feudal estate, which led to scattered settlement in the countryside and the agricultural exploitation of previously uncultivated land, with the need to build shelters for each farm.
