Aquaponic radial flow filter for solids removal..
I decided that I would try this style of filter after seeing one like it on an Earthan group clip.. It will also come on handy when the extra tanks are added.. Took a bit of playing with the pumps to get it flowing well but other than that it was a quick & easy build..
Would like to thank Paul from Earthan group for dropping off the Uniseals & for giving me loads of pointers over a coffee or 4..

The whole purpose of the filter is to slow the velocity of the water so the solids can precipitate out and be removed from the system.. For this to happen the water must slow its flow long enough inside the filter for the solids to settle out, this is called the retention time.. I have read in a few places that anything over 60 seconds retention time is acceptable for larger solids, with 2 min being the desirable amount of time for filters like ours..

The formula I use to see how long the water is retained in the filter before moving on is:
Size of filter (in litres) / flow rate (in litres per hour) = Retention time in hours.
(Same can be done in gallons & gallons per hour)
For our system the equation looks like this..
50 / 2700 = 0.0185 of an hour or 1minute 7seconds

PLEASE NOTE..
This clip was shot when I was worried about high nitrate levels & I thought it might be best to remove some of the load from the system. I am now not concerned about nitrite levels since learning more from some very experienced AP amateurs & professionals.
When I first started out planing this system I read that one this size didn't need a solids filter. I have found out the hard way that this is not always true & solids can build up in the grow beds causing toxic levels of nitrite to be released into the system if the grow bed system is poorly designed & left un checked.
Idea for this came from Earthan Group's DIY Solids Filter post which has been removed unfortunately, sorry folks.
