Wetzel's Employee Learns Sign Language - Customer Service Signs

Hi! This is my “Customer Service Signs” video so bear with me. :) If this video is too fast for you, you can slow down the video in the settings (click on the settings icon, the wheel icon, and click on playback speed and you will see a few different speed options… .75 or .5 to slow down).

I asked her (the employee) to send me words and phrases she uses often to communicate with customers to teach her before I came.

Here’s the list of the words and phrases (in American Sign Language- ASL) with timestamps.

Hello / Hi - 2:52
Welcome - 3:00
What can I get for you? (What would you like?) - 3:07
Pretzel - 3:23
Plain or salted? - 3:39
Cinnamon - 4:15
Anything to drink? - 4:27
Anything else? - 4:51
Is that all? - 5:07
Total - 5:13
Cash or card? - 5:54
No problem - 6:28
Have a good day - 6:50

Also, I sent her my Fingerspelling 101 course to learn the alphabet and practice fingerspelling her name, pretzels, and cinnamon as these words are commonly fingerspelled. There are a few different signs for pretzels but I just fingerspell pretzel. Cinnamon can also be fingerspelled “c-i-n-n” (and then sign the letter C handshape as if you’re sprinkling with cinnamon, not shown in the video).

If you haven’t learned the alphabet yet, here’s the link to the video where I teach the alphabet. :)

Also, I have a mini fingerspelling course which is great for those who haven’t learned the alphabet yet or have recently learned and want to practice with me. :)

The employee didn’t know the sign language alphabet before, until I gave her the Fingerspelling 101 course and she practiced for a few days before we filmed this video. It’s a super short and easy course, that you can finish in one hour and a half.

Fingerspelling 101 Course is a mini self paced online course that focuses only on the alphabet letters. This course also helps you improve your fingerspelling receptivity.

Fingerspelling 101 Course is currently on sale for $10 through February (until February 28 at midnight PST).

Here’s the link to enroll in the Fingerspelling 101 Course. The discount is already applied in the link but in case, the code is HNY. :) https://signedwithheart.teachable.com/p/fingerspelling101/?product_id=641197&coupon_code=HNY&preview=logged_out

As I’ve said that this is my first “Customer Service Signs” video… one of the challenges that comes with teaching ASL is deciding how to teach as there are a few different ways to sign a phrase. In this case, I’m talking about the phrase, “What can I get for you?” I wasn’t sure which way to teach… I could teach how to sign the phrase in English (meaning teaching signs for every word and signing in the exact English word order) or I could translate the phrase using different signs and signing in the ASL grammar (which is different from English) which is what I ended up deciding to do, but now I wish I would have taught the English way instead after talking with one of my deaf friends about it. She thought that signing “what you want?” might come off as rude for some deaf people (that’s why facial expressions are so important, be sure to smile when asking 😅). I chose to teach this way because I thought it would be easier for the employee and people watching this video to learn… fewer signs to remember. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It doesn’t have to be perfect though, the main thing is that you use what you know, we appreciate it when hearing people make an effort to communicate with us using what they know.

Anyways, hope you enjoy the video! :)

P.S. My ILY sweater is from @bymaraily (bymara.com). :)
