Hindered Settling Batch Sedimentation Design; FPT Ch6 Q1

Worked solution for Question 1, Chapter 6 (available as free download at https://www.particles.org.uk/particle_technology_book/index.htm) in Fundamentals of Particle Technology. This covers batch sedimentation within the hindered settling regime. A 3% by volume concentration suspension is pumped to a tank for settling, with a design requirement of 85% of the water to be returned to the process and a 3 day cycle before removing all the sludge from the tank. For a video of what batch sedimentation looks like, in the laboratory, please go to https://youtu.be/E9rHSLUr3PU. Batch sedimentation is not vessel area dependent, so we can use the laboratory tests to design the full scale tank for an industrial process. This video takes the viewer through that process, using a knowledge of the solids characteristics that rise from the vessel base and eventually meet the falling interface on a height versus time plot.
