Secret Life of Parasites: Nick Smith at TEDxJCUS
We all live with parasites; on us, in us, with our pets, in our food and water. They outsmart us, , parasites can alter their genes, protein and metabolic profile to adapt to attacks by the immune outpace us, outnumber us and make us sick. And they do it better in the tropics.More than any other creatures system of their host, resist anti-parasitic drugs and chemicals, move from host to host, and survive in hostile environments. Parasites try to live their lives in secret. They get in, reproduce and move on to a new host as fast as they possibly can. Can we keep up? Can we unlock their secrets? Can we control them or at least come to some sort of truce with them?
Nick Smith is a Tropical Leader and Professor of Molecular Cell Biology at James Cook University. He received his PhD in Parasitology from the Australian National University in 1988 and has studied parasited ever since with the goal to discover new vaccines to prevent transmission of parasites. Nick was made a Fellow of the Australian Society for Parasitology in 2008 in recognition of his contributions to research, education and enhancing the career development of young scientists.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.
