Nikon Z7 + 70-200mm f/2.8E FL VR + TC20e III teleconverter - Good Enough for Travelling?
Does the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8E FL VR lens still produce good images with the 2x teleconverter? I’d seen mixed reviews so I wanted to find out for myself!
We're travelling to Georgia in May and I’ll be taking my light and versatile Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 FL VR lens. Rather than also take my bulky Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6E, I wondered if I could use teleconverters to get more reach when I need it instead. I already knew that the Nikon TC14e III 1.4x converter works very well with this lens, but I was less sure about the TC20e III 2x converter and couldn’t find any reviews of that combination with the Nikon Z7 and FTZ adapter. I wanted to test the usability and image quality for myself, so I went out to find some red deer to photograph, and recorded this short video so I could share my little photographic experiment!
Having tested the lens and teleconverter in a few different situations, I can say that the combination to works very well. There are obviously some penalties when using the teleconverter (some loss of image sharpness, maximum aperture f/5.6, and less responsive autofocus / vibration reduction), but the image quality is still good and I feel these are acceptable given the weight and size advantages. For trips where weight is less of an issue, or when wildlife photography is the main focus, I'll still be using the 200-500mm lens, but for travelling, I'm happy to take the 70-200mm with my 1.4x / 2x teleconverters and leave the bigger lens at home.
Note: This is my own opinion based on my specific equipment and experiences. I am very lucky to be using the latest versions of both lens and teleconverter (second hand from eBay) and appreciate that results from different versions of either could be significantly different. Even with the same equipment, variation between different copies of the lens are possible, so mileage may vary! All images were post processed in the same way as they would have been if I’d used the 200-500mm lens. For the comparison image, post processing settings were identical.
