Stop Saying 'I Should Be Over This By Now | From The Restful Mind Sleepcast
As someone healing in real time on a podcast, the word "should" almost broke me.
"I should be over this by now." "I should handle stress better." "I should be further along." Every single one of those thoughts was comparing my real experience to an imaginary standard that doesn't even exist.
Three ways to catch and reframe your "shoulds":
1. When you hear yourself say "I should be over this," ask yourself: "According to whom? Based on what timeline?" There's usually no real answer, it's just shame talking.
2. Replace "I should" with "I'm still learning to." Instead of "I should have better boundaries" say "I'm still learning to set boundaries." Same situation, zero shame.
3. Write your biggest "should" on paper tonight and cross it out. Write the compassionate version underneath. Put it somewhere you'll see it every morning.
Your healing doesn't have a deadline. The timeline is yours.
