Radxa Rock 5B RK3588 2025 Update (Linux 6.15.7 Mesa 25.1.6) Box64, Switch, and Web Video Playback

It is a feat to get gentoo running on this. It's the only distro with a new enough kernel to get all the RK3588 features developed so far. I had to cross compile the kernel in a chroot from the stage3 on my host gentoo x86 machine. Then I had to boot it and rebuild the entire operating system on the board itself. I'm using "-mcpu=native -O3" for all builds, plus lto, pgo, and whatever optimize USE flags I could find.

I'm using the UEFI from github, v1.1. It finally supports booting from EMMC so I installed it to SPI. I have a 2GB Fat32 for grub and 126GB XFS partition for root. If you use EXT4 you don't need the Fat32 partition, UEFI can read EXT4.

There has been huge improvements on this board. It is now daily driver ready, but it needs VAAPI and OpenGL 4.6+. Currently only has 3.1? It doesn't overheat but it's picky about power supplies apparently. I recommend to stay away from Anker. They are budget option pretending and pricing to be premium. They don't even follow the entire USB PD specification, unlike almost every other brand. I have a 100W Anker and it was causing the board to reboot everytime there was a load.

HDMI only supports up to 1920x1080 60hz and 4k 30hz. To get 4k they still need to implement scrambling support? I believe HDMI video output was introduced in kernel 6.13, which Debian is still not using.

I suspect there's also some bugs with PanVK (vulkan) because no matter how I built Eden it would segfault on Vulkan. I wanted to test wine and Dark Souls Remastered but it was already a headache getting where it is now. Every single part of this gave me problems I had to overcome.

Thank you to the awesome developers at Collobora, most if not all development into mainline linux for this chip has been done by this team. I hope they keep up the great work!
