You might have heard this region called Great Britain, United Kingdom, or England. But which is the correct name actually, and what is the difference between all of them? Firstly, there are two large islands here. The smaller island is called Ireland, which has two countries: Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The larger island consists of three different countries: England, whose capital is London; Scotland, whose capital is Edinburgh; and Wales, whose capital is Cardiff. When we say England, it refers to the southern part of the island. Great Britain is a large island which contains these three countries. And United Kingdom or UK means the country which includes the three countries of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The Republic of Ireland is a different country whose capital is Dublin, and it is part of the European Union. All these areas together are called the British Isles, which include Great Britain, Ireland, and more than six thousand smaller islands
