Prigionier che fa ritorno (Jommelli) Delphine Galou

Prigionier che fa ritorno from the oratorio Betulia liberata (1743)
Niccolò Jommelli (1714-1774)

Delphine Galou, contralto
Accademia Bizantina
Ottavio Dantone, conductor

Libretto by Pietro Metastasio (1698-1782).
Jommelli’s is one of about 30 settings of this libretto, the most famous being Mozart’s.

Prigionier che fa ritorno
Dagli orrori ad di sereno,
Chiude I lumi ai rai del giorno,
E pur tanto il sospirò.
Ma così fra poco arriva
A soffrir la chiara luce,
Che l’avviva, e lo conduce
Lo spendor che l’abbagliò.

TRANSLATION (by Charles Johnston):
The captive who returns
From darkness to serene daylight
Closes his eyes against the sun’s rays,
Though he so longed for them.
But, if he does so, soon he is able
To endure the bright light
That revives him, and he is guided
By the radiance that dazzled him.
