Per le porte del tormento (Handel) Ann Hallenberg & Monica Piccinini

“Per le porte del tormento“ from Imeneo, HWV 41
by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759)

Ann Hallenberg (Tirinto) & Monica Piccinini (Rosmene)
Europa Galante with Fabio Biondi, conductor

From a recording of Handel’s late opera Imeneo, given in its serenade-style 1742 Dublin version. This duet was originally from Handel’s opera Sosarme which had its premiere in 1732. This duet was apparently very popular in Handel’s day and was often extracted for concert performance.

Tirinto/Rosmene:
Per Ie porte del tormento
passan I'anime a gioir!

Sta il contento del cordoglio sul confine;
Non v’è rosa senza spine,
Né piacer senza martir.

TRANSLATION:
Through the gates of suffering
souls must pass to finally gain pleasure!

Contentment stands at the edge of grief;
There is no rose without thorns,
Nor pleasure without suffering
