90-Day Money Experiment: The Pattern Nobody Expects
I tracked every financial decision I made for 90 days. What I found wasn't overspending. It was a pattern costing me $11,600 a year, and I never saw it.
Over 90 days, I logged 847 financial decisions across four categories: spending, saving, investing, and avoidance. The data revealed something behavioral finance research has documented, but that almost no personal finance content actually measures. The pattern wasn't in my biggest purchases. It was in 94 automatic decisions I made without thinking, and 67 financial avoidance decisions I didn't even realize I was making. Together, those two categories cost me more than any single major expense in the quarter.
This video covers the full experiment: how I built the logging system, what the data showed at 30, 60, and 90 days, the behavioral finance research that explains why the pattern exists (Kahneman and Tversky's Prospect Theory, Klontz and Klontz's money script typology, Benartzi's ostrich effect), and the three-step framework I built from the results. If you track your spending but you have never tracked your avoidance decisions, this data will change how you think about your finances.
