Using your old COAX for modern ETHERNET - MDSlink MaGiC SFP MoCa Adapters

Today I'm investigating MoCa - it stands for Multimedia over Coax Alliance, but it's really just a standard for sending ordinary Ethernet frames over coaxial cable. Modern MoCa 2.5 can even do (you guessed it!) 2.5Gbps. Of course this is half duplex, shared between all clients / directions.

Specifically today I'm looking at these neat little SFP modules, so if you are part of the Unifi Bling Club, you can rest easy that these will look great in your rack. Of course, not everyone needs SFP for their adapters, so I also tested with an off-the-shelf MoCa 2.5 adapter, for traditional RJ45 Ethernet.

Of course, 2.5G is not bad in a modern home network, but it's really great if you have a need to re-use modern coax cabling. This can be especially important for MDUs, multiple dwelling units, basically a fancy term for residential buildings such as apartments, dorms, or hotels, and many older buildings may have been wired for cable TV in the past decades, and that cable can be put to use today (if you get new splitters, probably).
