You taught the room to wonder
Before the stamp was seen.
You taught the line to listen
For a guilt it could not name.
You taught the counter caution
Till caution learned to blame.
And now the fear you planted
Has started speaking in your name.
Take a look at what you’re teaching
To the people standing there.
Take a look at what you’re turning
Into ordinary care.
If the truth is in the paper,
Let the paper speak it plain.
But don’t make shame your method
And call it by truth’s name.
Maybe paper had its season.
Maybe old roads have to close.
Maybe every public promise
Needs a number no one knows.
Maybe every little stamp book
Needs a future no one sees.
But fear cannot repair it
By teaching workers to believe.
The warning learned suspicion
Then called suspicion wise.
The policy hid the measure
Then trained a thousand eyes.
The promise left the window
Then feared the open road.
And when the promise wandered,
It blamed the hands that hold.

No one has to build tomorrow
To see what fear entails.
When a broken public promise
Starts searching for a face,
That is not public safety.
That is organized disgrace.
Fear is not a system.
Shame is not a plan.
Guilt is not a payment mark
