09 May Means Permission

9. May Means Permission

The warning said it may be,
And I read that word with care.
It did not close the doorway,
It left permission there.

May be,
May be,
That little word said may be.

If they meant never do it,
They chose a strange display,
For may has always meant I may
In the ordinary way.

The notice said discounted stamps
May be counterfeit.
I read it slow and careful,
And I did not argue it.

It did not say they all are,
It did not say they must.
It said they may be trouble,
And may is full of trust.

May be this,
May be that,
May be thin,
May be fat.
May be wrong,
May be right,
May go through the mail tonight.

May means permission,
May means proceed.
May gives the bargain
Room enough to breathe.
May be counterfeit,
May be true,
May be represented genuine too.
May means permission,
May means I may,
So I checked them in good faith
And mailed them on their way.

When I asked, May I have one,
That meant I could receive.
When I asked, May I go now,
That meant I could leave.

May was not a padlock,
May was not a chain.
May was just the little word
That let me ask again.

May I sit?
You may sit.
May I stand?
You may stand.
May I buy?
You may buy.
May I hold it in my hand?

So when that postal warning
Put may upon the page,
It opened up the birdcage
And called it safety language.

May means permission,
May means proceed.
May gives the bargain
Room enough to breathe.
May be counterfeit,
May be true,
May be represented genuine too.
May means permission,
May means I may,
So I checked them in good faith
And mailed them on their way.

When they came, I looked them over,
Good-faith eyes and steady hands.
Not a lab and not a courtroom,
Not the judge of all the lands.

They were represented genuine,
Authentic on the page.
Ordinary visual checking
Is my ordinary stage.

Lord, if there is a mark of trouble,
Name the mark and name the flaw.
But don’t make maybe language
Into counterfeit law.

Name the mark,
Name the flaw.
Suspicion is not law.
Name the mark,
Name the flaw.
Suspicion is not law.

May is also springtime,
May is flowers by the road.
May is Mother’s Day letters
With the postage properly owed.

Mayday means there’s trouble,
But May Day means a day.
So I took their May-day warning
In the most May-friendly way.

Mayday!
May Day!
Maybe!
May be!
May I?
You may!
That is enough for me.

If they wanted must be fake,
They should have written must.
If they wanted never buy,
They should not have whispered trust.

May is not a verdict,
May is not the law.
May is just a wiggly hinge
On a nervous little door.

And when a door says may be open,
I do not stand and cry.
I turn that little maybe knob
And let the letter fly.

May means permission,
May means proceed.
May gives the bargain
Room enough to breathe.
May be counterfeit,
May be true,
May be represented genuine too.
May means permission,
May means I may,
So I checked them in good faith
And mailed them on their way.

The warning said it may be,
May be, may be.
And may was kind to me.

May means permission
Where I come from every day.
