Why are people LEAVING CALIFORNIA | California's Disaster is Worsening

California used to be considered the most desirable state to live in for many Americans. People all over the world were drawn to California’s golden shores.

However California of 2020, is very different from what it was even a few decades ago.

The truth is that California has been showing signs of decline for years, but it hasn’t hit a critical point until the events of 2020 pushed it over the edge. As problems that have been building up over decades, slowly rise to the surface, some people are wondering if we are going to see a massive collapse over the next few years.

To understand why this collapse might happen, let’s look up to the events leading up to this point in time.

From the 70s until about 2010, california saw a massive migration into the states both domestically and from abroad, however recently less and less people are willing to leave their home states to move to California.

In fact, since 2011, the net domestic migration has been negative. Meaning that more people move away from California than move in from other states. The state is still growing in population, because of the birth rate and international migration, but domestic residents are rapidly moving out.

While California collects large amounts of taxes from various industries, it relies on it’s abundant tech and entertainment industry millionaires and billionaires, who support the various government programs in California. Even though California taxes millionaires and billionaires higher than most states, for a time we saw that higher taxes did not detract millionaires from moving to California, because their money making potential was still increased, even with the higher tax rate.

However that changed in 2012 after the implementation of proposition 30, which imposed a higher tax rate on incomes, topping out at a 3% increase on incomes above $1 million for married couples. After the proposition passed, the likelihood of wealthy residents fleeing the state increased by about 40%.

Still, California controls a massive share of the world’s wealth. California's GDP last year was $3.2T, representing 15% of the total U.S. economy. California's economy is so big that if it were a country, it would be the 5th largest economy in the world, more productive than India and the United Kingdom.

Yet in all this abundance, California has the highest poverty rates in the United States. More than a third of Californians are living in or near poverty. Nearly one in five Californians were not in poverty but lived fairly close to the poverty line. All told, more than a third of state residents were poor or near poor in 2018 and this trend is getting worse.

This creates a massive dependency on the welfare state that exists in california, without government support, many families would find themselves unable to meet basic necessities for survival.

34% Of the United states welfare recipients live in California but California is only 12% of the population. California is third among states in per-capita spending on welfare, we spend $179 per Capita, New York leads the nation with $256 per capita spending and Idaho is at the bottom with just $17 per capita.

Things like high housing costs and taxes have a large impact on the cost of living for the average person, and California, despite its wealth, has the nation's highest poverty rates according to the US census Bureau. Anyone who visited coastal cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego has seen a massive homelesses crisis that has been spiraling out of control. Tent cities are spreading across our streets, underpasses and public beaches. Residents feel unsafe walking home even in broad daylight, worried about encountering physical violence from potentially disturbed people that inhabit the streets.

Even nice, expensive Los Angeles neighborhoods are experiencing seeing drug use and defecation on their streets. Some complain about worrying about their children unable to play in their neighborhood without encountering used needles, condoms and human feces.

Civil Rights groups have sued for more homeless rights and new laws were passed in places like Los Angeles that make it illegal for police to remove a homeless person’s belongings from the street. It’s common now to see homeless people take up residences on the lawns of homeowners who are powerless to remove them and unable to ask for police assistance. A new movement is asking people to refer to the homeless people in their neighborhood as “our unhoused neighbors” and to welcome them into your neighborhood.
Critics of California’s welfare state have suggested that the vast, unchecked welfare spending, works like a magnet, attracting welfare seekers from other states as well as abroad.
