Mary And Her Baby Survive Despite The Odds

I'm really not fond of this time of the year as this is when heavily pregnant flying-foxes and new mothers come into care through entanglement on barbed wire fencing, large aperture netting entrapment, car hits, dog attacks. electrocution on overhead power lines and a myriad of other causes.
Following the loss of an unborn baby yesterday as a result of the stress of barbed wire entanglement, Mary came into care this morning with her newborn son clinging to her traumatised body.
I hope that Mary will eventually be released back to the wild but that all depends on how her injuries heal up.
In the meantime, a careful watch will be kept on Mary to ensure she is comfortable and lactation is maintained during this stressful time.
Please never plant any fruiting or flowering plants next to barbed wire fencing and if at all possible, please remove the stuff.
If you look carefully at the baby you can see a rather large bat fly. These are nycteribiidae and they are species specific. Once mum is feeling better she will deal with this annoying issue herself.
