It is interesting what can happen when you open up to the universe and just say yes to what comes your way.

Last July award winning Canadian songwriter Lennie Gallant’s friend Bob Jensen, who is an agent for Zimbabwe band, Black Umfolosi, mentioned to Lennie that the group was on tour and when passing through Prince Edward Island, were looking for a place to stay for a couple days. Lennie said he’d fix them up and Bob suggested that perhaps they could sing a song with him. Lennie thought a Christmas song would be the way to go, and so wrote Christmas Day on Planet Earth with the singers in mind.

The song uses the original Christmas nativity story of the desperate couple looking for lodging for their baby to be born, set against the present day situation of refugees and homeless people in need of shelter. ‘Christmas is a time for giving and opening hearts, and that should be what the season is all about’, says Gallant.

They recorded and filmed a video for it all in one day on Prince Edward Island.

Gallant is well known across Canada and beyond as a prolific songwriter and has a brand new album out called Time Travel. He is a member of The Order Of Canada, received The Red Cross Humanitarian Award for PEI, and has even had his music taken to the International Space Station for the crew to enjoy.

Black Umfolosi is a world famous acappella and dance group from Zimbabwe. Their performances are energy driven and completely engaging, mixing a great gentleness of spirit and song with an exuberance in dance thrilling audiences worldwide and they address various issues affecting society today.

The song was recorded by Colin Buchanan and the video filmed, directed and edited by award winning director John Hopkins from Square Deal Productions.
