Acrobatic Feeding Frenzy: Green Tree Monitor vs. Giant Blue Hornworms!

Basil, the green tree monitor lizard (Varanus prasinus), doing his daily exercises before dinner 😉. All jokes aside, you can see that I am feeding him some hornworm caterpillars with some enrichment spin ✨! When food is out of reach, tree monitors possess a unique set of skills they can use to get to food in hard-to-reach places. One of them is to rise and stand on their two hind legs. Watching a lizard effortlessly stand up on two legs is pretty impressive. I think it’s good to create opportunities for these animals to stretch and move and even struggle to reach food. This activity prevents muscle atrophy and certainly offers stimulation! Tree monitors never cease to amaze me!
