This is the shocking moment a black teacher was pepper sprayed by police moments after giving a speech on Martin Luther King Day.

Jesse Hagopian, who teaches at Garfield High School in Seattle, was walking along the pavement talking to his mother on the phone when he was sprayed in the face by a female officer on January 19.

He is now seeking damages, which will be determined in a trial.

The footage, which was filmed by a passer-by, shows the history teacher trying to pass through a crowd, which has gathered at the entrance to a road.

As he calmly walks in front of the barricade of police officers while on the phone, they start screaming 'stand back'.

Seconds later a female cop can be seen spraying a canister of pepper spray, covering Mr Hagopian as well as a lady walking in front of him.

He is then heard shouting: 'Ow, they just sprayed me,' as he runs past the camera.

The clips ends with the police continuing to shout at the crowd as they block the way using bicycles.

Mr Hagopian claims he was treated for breathing difficulties, anxiety and stress.

He told Q13 Fox News he also missed some of his two-year-old son's birthday party because of the incident.
