These days it wouldn't be a holiday without the obligatory selfie in front of a landmark.

But tourists hoping to snap themselves at the Eiffel Tower or Trevi Fountain could soon be thwarted – by an EU ban on pictures of public buildings.

Brussels will decide next week on a legal amendment which would require permission from the relevant body before a photo can be taken, even if the landmark is only in the background.
The pictures themselves are not an issue but the publication of them on social media could be a breach of copyright, German newspaper Bild reported.

The law is aimed at commercial photographers, although there are fears ordinary holidaymakers could be prosecuted and face a fine or even a jail sentence.

Julia Rede, a member of German alternative Pirate Party and herself an MEP, said: 'Limitations on the freedom to take panorama shots will bring millions of Europeans into conflict with copyright holders.'

Is the EU soon going to ban selfies from the top of the Eiffel Tower?' asked the regional German newspaper Osnabruecker Zeitung.

Net activists and photographers are threatening a fightback. Photo organisation Freelens said: 'Gaining permission for a photo of every building in Europe is unrealistic.'

Although the EU says amending the law is aimed at commercial photographers, the fears are that ordinary people will become bogged down in a legal Big Brother nightmare, with the prospect of new 'Facebook Police' combing websites to find infringers and prosecute them.

MEP Rede is proposing an amendment to introduce a new Panorama Freedom law across Europe to counter the move.

Online encyclopaedia Wikipedia is firmly against the move and plans to publish users photos of popular sites like the Louvre to illustrate the 'madness' of the new proposals.
