I know for most of us, drinking a cup of coffee can be incredibly pleasurable, and we think it gives us energy to get through our days.
But ultimately, it is working against you not only for energy but also for your health.
First of all, it’s important to keep in mind that caffeine is a drug. It works on your body’s central nervous system (CNS) to stimulate the fight-or-flight response, which impacts your adrenal glands, which in turn play a huge role in the regulation and release of stress hormones.
And, plus, caffeine is addictive.
In fact, our bodies can become chemically dependent on caffeine, causing withdrawal symptoms if we go without it.
The constant hormonal ups-and-downs caused your CNS response to caffeine eventually sap your adrenal glands, essentially wearing them out and leading to exhaustion.
And that’s not even getting into the blood sugar swings that can occur as a result of drinking caffeinated beverages.
I’m willing to argue that any benefits that caffeine might have for your system could be easily replaced – and expanded – by adding some healthier choices to diet.
If you just can’t bear the thought of giving up your morning coffee, there are some substitutes that might fit the bill, ranging from chicory root to herbal teas and green drinks. Or, you could just go with swiss water decaf.
If you decide to kick caffeine – which ultimately will give you even more energy than you can imagine – be sure to taper off it slowly so you don’t end up feeling nasty for a few days as a result of withdrawal.
