Loft Ceiling Insulation

In this video I show how to cut and install rigid-board PIR insulation, in between the rafters in the ceiling of the loft.

First I cut and install little 35mm spacers which all a continuous air gap between the breathable felt later and the insulation - this means that condensation is unlikely to build up and soak through the insulation, and conforms to the building regulations in the UK.

Celotex/Kingspan and the like have their own specifications of what can be achieved with that air-gap. They say that the air gap can be as little as 25mm, where building regulations state a minimum of 50mm gap. The building inspector confirmed that when you are using a named brand that has specified what the product tolerance/threshold is, you can ignore the building regs and trust the product.

I used 35mm because that was the width of the battens that had been left over from the roofing job, and I didn't need to spend additional money on new materials.

This is a really messy horrible job - I highly recommend using a face mask/dust shield and eye protection, it's almost impossible to work overhead without getting this stuff all over you, and it's horrible to breathe in and have in your mouth.

The boards get individually cut and installed to over-come any small discrepancies between each of the rafters, rather than cutting them all to a generic size and hoping they will fit.
