In the legitimate rush to save lives and the economy, the federal and state governments have been spending billions and billions of dollars. It’s the right thing to do, but because no one can predict how long the coronavirus pandemic will last, there are other concerns that must now also be tackled. Most important is how we’re going to feed ourselves. With other countries shutting down borders and exports, the security of Australia’s food supply is paramount, but it seems to be low on the list of government priorities. The dilemma we face is highlighted in the nation’s food bowl, where bureaucrats are refusing to give farmers along the Murray River access to the water they need to grow vital crops.
