Howard Lovecraft (1890-1937)
Howard Lovecraft — a genius of horror who died in poverty. During his lifetime, his stories were published in cheap pulp magazines, but today his books sell by the millions. He created Cthulhu and the concept of "cosmic horror" — the idea that the universe is filled with ancient gods who are indifferent to humanity.
Interestingly, Lovecraft had a deep fear of cold, the sea, and sharks — phobias that became the backbone of his dark narratives. He wrote only at night and rarely left his house during the day.
He passed away from cancer at 46, but his mythology went on to inspire The X-Files, and even science — one of Mercury’s craters is named in his honor!
