Black Lives Matter protests 'totally oxymoronic': Joyce

Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce says Black Lives Matter protests planned in the Northern Territory and other remote areas are “totally oxymoronic” as remote Indigenous communities are most vulnerable to the coronavirus.

Upwards of 1,400 people have indicated they will attend a protest in Darwin on Saturday.

The Northern Territory’s health minister supported the protest, highlighting people's right to free speech.

“If black lives matter then they definitely matter in the remote Aboriginal communities of the Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia,” Mr Joyce told Sky News.

“If that disease gets back there by reason of these protests then it makes it totally oxymoronic in the statement that black lives matter.

“Because apparently it won’t be the black lives of those who live in those remote communities.”
