Nation Needs More Number of Ham's for Strengthening Disaster Management

"The Nation Needs More Licensed Hams to Strengthen Disaster Management Efforts"

In times of crisis—be it floods, earthquakes, cyclones, or any other natural or man-made disaster—amateur radio (Ham radio) plays a vital role when conventional communication systems fail. Across the world, ham radio operators have consistently demonstrated their value by providing reliable, decentralized, and rapid communication in emergency situations.

In India, legendary examples include the Orissa Super Cyclone (1999), the Gujarat Earthquake (2001), and more recently, the floods in Andhra Pradesh, where Hams served as a lifeline for information and coordination.

But for a country of 1.4 billion people, the number of licensed ham operators is shockingly low. To build a resilient communication backbone, especially at the grassroots level, the nation urgently needs:

More licensed ham operators

Regular disaster communication drills

Integration of Hams into state and district disaster management protocols

Youth engagement and training programs

Let’s empower communities with the skill of self-reliant communication. Let’s train more Hams, especially in disaster-prone areas, and ensure India is always ready—connected and coordinated—even in the darkest hours.
