Introduction:

In this piano review video, Stu Harrison of Merriam Pianos guides us through an overview of Roland’s ultra-popular FP series of portable digital pianos, including the FP-10, FP-30, FP-60, and FP-90. These are the latest examples in Roland’s long standing FP line, and deliver top-in-class action, tone engine, and durability for all-in-one portable digital pianos.
Tone Engines & Sound:

All of the FP series uses the Supernatural Sound Engine as the basis for it’s tone generation, and although the polyphony steadily increases as you go from the Roland FP-10 to the FP-90, the same fundamental algorithms and architecture is there right from $600 and up. The one exception to this is of course the modelling tech that the FP90 also comes loaded with; that fancy feature delivers unlimited polyphony in piano mode, in addition to it’s Supernatural engine available on its other sounds at 388 polyphony.

The FP10 and FP30 have traditional downward-facing speakers which are a little weak in bass response, but generally have well-balanced amps and speakers that prevent any gross distortion even at max volumes. The tone cuts through, and both instruments are very competent accompaniment instruments or jam partners, in addition to personal practice instruments or studio MIDI input controllers.

The FP60 and FP90 have tweeters and mains, and bring far more watts to game day. The FP60 is extremely punchy in its tone to the point where you could play this in a small performance setting without an amp if you had to, and certainly a rehearsal without one, however the FP90 brings a substantial amplifier that gives this a full-spectrum sound.

Action:

The FP-10, FP-30, and FP-60 use Roland’s Triple-Sensing PHA-4 action, a proven and well-liked action that also shows up on the FP501, F140r, and several other models. It’s durable, quiet, and satisfying to play for contemporary music as well as introductory classical.

The FP-90 uses an entirely different action, the PHA-50...an action with wood components and a slightly slower, heavier stroke and return to simulate a grand action more closely than the PHA-4. There is significant debate in the industry over which action is more ‘satisfying’... a wholly subjective discussion with no agreement - so our advice is to ensure you’ve tried both so that you find out which action’s mechanical nuances are better suited for your fingers and preferences.

Other Features:

The FP-10 and FP-30 are contained in super lightweight, lean and mean plastic shells which are durable, easy to operate, and highly portable. The FP-60 and FP-90 come in more substantial cases which are both deeper and thicker, to accommodate larger speaker boxes, larger amps and speakers, and a much more intricate control surface.

Conclusions:

If you’re a student, hobbyist player, or working professional, if you’re looking for a portable piano with built-in speakers, an FP model is a MUST-SEE before deciding on something. They are famously indestructible, easy to operate, flexible with Bluetooth midi, lightweight (except maybe the FP90), and offer a wide array of high-quality studio-grade sounds.
