#FP10 #CDPS350 #DigitalPiano

Hi all, and welcome to another piano comparison here at the Merriam Pianos YouTube channel. Today, we’ll be comparing two of the most popular entry-level digital pianos in the Casio CDP-S350 and Roland FP10.

Both of these instruments feature full 88-note, weighted and touch-sensitive actions, and are a great option for those just starting out in piano lessons, or for someone who needs an affordable, full-sized instrument.

Piano Overview

If we rewind about 5, Casio released the PX-160 which really raised the bar and changed the industry for entry-level digital pianos. Roland responded a few years later with the FP10, while the CDP-S350 serves as Casio’s follow up to the PX-160. These two instruments are among the absolute best selling entry-level digital pianos on the market.

Piano Sound

Comparing these two instruments side-by-side and it’s apparent that they offer very different sonic experiences. The CDP-S350 features a pair of 8-watt speakers, while the FP10 uses a pair of 6-watt speakers, but the difference in power isn’t really noticeable, and the FP10 actually has a warmer tone despite less power on paper.

The FP10 has 96 notes of polyphony, but the same sound chip as the more expensive FP30X, but with less processing power. The tradeoff is maintaining a complex piano sound in exchange for less polyphony.

The CDP-S350 has 64 notes of polyphony, but the sound engine itself is the same as the more expensive PX-S series instruments. 64 notes really isn't very much polyphony in 2021, and it is noticeable when getting into the auto-accompaniment with some more complex chords.

When it comes to onboard tones, the FP10 has little more than a dozen, though all of good quality. The S350 on the other hand has 700 tones! The user interface is nicely laid out, but you can also connect via USB cable to a smart device to use Casio’s Chordana Play App.

Piano Action

The FP10 uses Roland’s PHA4 action, which is featured all throughout Roland’s lineup up to about the $2,500 price point. This action features a triple sensor and escapement, and is arguably the best and most advanced action in its class. Overall, this is a great action that all of us at Merriam Music think very highly of.

The CDP-S350 uses Casio’s Scaled Weighted Hammer Action Keyboard, which is different from the action in their PX-S series. This action is actually quieter than the action in the PX-S series, and the repetition speed on the black keys is actually faster. This action features a double sensor and does not have escapement.

If your number one priority is action, there’s no doubt the FP10 takes the cake, but both are certainly usable and acceptable in a wide variety of playing situations.

Piano Features

The FP10 is available with a matching stand but is not compatible with a triple pedal. It comes standard with a basic switch pedal, but you can upgrade to Roland’s DP10 sustain pedal capable of half-pedaling.

The CDP-S350 is also available with a matching stand, as well as an optional triple pedal system.

They both have the same basic features one would expect, such as metronome, transpose, split, layer, etc.

In terms of other features, the FP10 is pretty bare-bones, while the S350 actually has a fairly sophisticated on-board auto accompaniment feature, with a variety of rhythms and backing tracks. There’s also an arpeggiator which is super fun.

Conclusions:

These are two very different options for approximately the same price. If your main focus is on getting as close an instrument to an acoustic piano as possible, the FP10 will be your best bet. If on the other hand you’re looking for a variety of features or just general musical fun, all of the extra features and tones in the CDP-S350 make it the superior option.
