Dala’il al-Khayrat: History and Importance - Shaykh Muhammad Ba-Dhib & Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Shaykh Muhammad Ba-Dhib begins his introduction by explaining how scholars across the Islamic sciences served the Prophetic legacy through variegated ways in their various sciences. Once these had been established, a new genre of works appeared, gathering litanies of remembrance for Muslims’ devotions.

Shaykh Ba-Dhib introduces the author of Dala’il al-Khayrat, Imam Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Jazuli (807-870 AH), whose work has been recited by Muslims worldwide since it was authored, weekly, or even daily—as in the daily gatherings of the Dala’il held for 300 years in Medina and also Mecca, where specific families were distinguished for traditionally holding the post of “Sheikh of the Dala’il.” The chain of transmission of the critical editor of the work, Shaykh Nuh Keller, for instance, primarily goes through scholars of Mecca, Medina, and North Africa.

These chains of transmission provide an important point, Shaykh Ba-Dhib points out: both knowledge and prayers have a way they are taken. One must search for and connect oneself with scholars, whether they are publicly known (as the circles of the Dala’il were before) or hidden.

In closing, both Shaykh Ba-Dhib and Shaykh Faraz highlight that one should not listen to naysayers who declare these acts to be innovations, while refraining from disputation. When dealing with religious confusion, accept what’s true with Allah, and then seek the answer from reliable scholars. Acceptance of Dala’il al-Khayrat is the norm of Muslims throughout history. It is a blessed work which scholars paid attention to transmitting—Imam Jazuli’s devotional compilation which he gathered to serve the Prophet and Muslims has caused Muslims to send blessings on the Prophet for over 500 years.

Shaykh Faraz closes by encouraging us us to practically commit to reciting Dala’il al-Khayrat in this blessed month, reminding of some of the virtues of sending blessings on the Prophet.

The Messenger of Allah (peace & blessings be upon him) described the circles of remembrance as gardens of Paradise. [Related by Tirmidhi]

The Friday Circle is a gathering of gratitude, joy, and inspiration. It is an ideal gathering to end one’s week with spiritual upliftment and beneficial company. All are welcome—young and old, single and families. In this weekly Circle, led by Shaykh Muhammad Ba-Dhib, Shaykh Faraz Rabbani and Ustadh Amjad Tarsin, we uphold the Prophetic sunna of group remembrance (dhikr) of Allah; sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace be upon him); and exchanging beneficial and inspiring religious reminders.
