When they Came Home: Soldiers and American Society from the Revolution to the War on Terror
After the end of every American military engagement, soldiers returned to their homes, families, and communities. Driven by their experience, soldiers and veterans ran for office at the national and local level, advocated for policy changes, created voluntary organizations, and shaped American culture for the next generation. When They Came Home, a symposium hosted by the Center for Presidential History, will examine how each generation of soldiers left a unique imprint on American society and the parallels between the post-war experiences over several centuries of conflict.
The symposium features five scholars from across the country:
Lindsay Chervinsky (SMU Center for Presidential History) – The American Revolution
Lesley Gordon (University of Alabama) – The Civil War
Chad Williams (Brandeis University) – World War I and World War II
Nate Packard (Marine Corps University) – The Vietnam War through the Gulf War.
Kori Schake (International Institute for Strategic Studies) – The War on Terror
