Lincoln’s Code: The Laws of War in American History

The event’s key speaker, John Fabian Witt, is currently a professor at Yale University’s School of Law. He has received Yale’s John Addison Porter Prize and was previously Columbia University’s George Welwood Murray Professor of Legal History.

His book, "Lincoln’s Code: The Laws of War in American History," won Columbia University’s 2013 Bancroft Prize in History of the Americas. Lincoln’s Code deals with the United States’ influence on international laws of war and wartime cruelty starting with the Lincoln administration’s publication of a new fighting code for Union soldiers in 1863.
