Lytton, BC residents flee wildfire days after village recorded record heat

Just days after the village of Lytton, B.C. reported the hottest temperature ever recorded in Canada, residents were fleeing the community Wednesday as an aggressive wildfire advanced.

Nanette Phillips-Smith captured the harrowing moments as she and another person drove through the village amid smoke and falling ash. As many as 1,500 people from Lytton and surrounding areas were ordered to evacuate, many with as little as 15 minutes notice after the fire broke out shortly after 5 p.m. on June 30. Satellite imagery by Colorado State University's Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere showed the rapid growth of large wildfires in the province between June 29 and 30.

MP Brad Vis, who represents the region, wrote on Facebook Thursday that 90 per cent of the village had burned, including the town centre. Neighbouring Telus and BC Hydro centres had also seen extensive damage.
