Talk show star and former mayor of Cincinnati Jerry Springer has passed away. He passed away on Thursday at his home in a Chicago suburb, according to his publicist of many years, Linda Shafran. His age was given as 79.

Longtime friend and family spokesman Jene Galvin stated, "Jerry's ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried, whether that was politics, broadcasting, or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word." Memories of his intelligence, heart, and humor will endure long after his death.

The Jerry Springer Show, where regular individuals from all over the country (including unfaithful spouses, love triangles, and incest) revealed shocking, often disgusting facts of their lives, made Springer famous. Whenever there was a fight on the show, the audience would erupt in chants of "Jerry, Jerry, Jerry!"
Springer was born in London during WWII and moved to New York with his family when he was young. He was elected to the Cincinnati City Council in the 1970s and eventually became mayor.
At first, Springer did not have high hopes for his chances of success. When the event was first announced in 1991, he told the Cincinnati Enquirer, "I thought, 'Who are we kidding?' " We won't make it even 13 weeks! There were 27 seasons of the show.
