A Yank In Libya (1942) - A reporter stumbles on a Nazi plot in Libya
American correspondent Mike Malone (Walter Woolf King) arrives in North Africa and uncovers evidence of a Nazi-backed plot to incite an uprising among Arab tribes in Libya. While investigating, he is pursued by agents moving within the territory controlled by Sheik David (Duncan Renaldo), a powerful tribal leader whose loyalties are not immediately clear. Forced to flee, Mike seeks refuge in the hotel suite of Nancy Brooks (Joan Woodbury), who is secretly working for British Intelligence. Trusting her instincts, she agrees to conceal a gun for him, allowing Mike to escape through a window before his pursuers can capture him.
Mike reports what he has learned to British Consul Herbert Forbes (H. B. Warner), expecting support, but Forbes attempts to discourage him from further involvement, as the British are already aware of the conspiracy and quietly preparing their own response. Suspicious of the consul’s evasiveness, Mike continues his investigation and soon finds himself entangled in a web of deception and shifting alliances.
When Mike and Forbes visit Nancy again, she denies knowing Mike, maintaining her cover and protecting her position within British Intelligence. Meanwhile, internal conflict grows among the Arab leadership. Sheik Ibrahim (George Lewis), second in command, secretly conspires with Nazi agent Yussof Streyer (William Vaughn) to assassinate Sheik David, who has shown sympathy toward the British cause. Their plan is to seize control of the tribes and launch an uprising that will weaken Allied control of the region.
Determined to uncover the truth, Mike joins forces with Nancy, and together they travel to David’s desert camp. They discover the extent of the conspiracy but are placed in danger when Ibrahim’s henchmen attempt to eliminate them. Narrowly escaping, they race back across the desert toward El Moktar, pursued by hostile forces intent on silencing them.
As the threat escalates, the planned uprising moves closer to execution. Mike and Nancy arrive just in time to alert the authorities, enabling British forces to prepare for the attack. In the ensuing confrontation, the conspiracy is exposed, Ibrahim’s treachery is revealed, and the Nazi-backed plot collapses before it can succeed.
With the danger averted, order is restored, and the fragile alliance between British forces and loyal tribal leaders is preserved. Mike’s determination and Nancy’s courage prove crucial in preventing the uprising and maintaining stability in the region.
A 1942 American Black & White war thriller film directed by Albert Herman, produced by George M. Merrick, original story and screenplay by Arthur St. Claire and Sherman Lowe, cinematography by Edward Linden, starring H. B. Warner, Walter Woolf King, Parkyarkarkus, Joan Woodbury, Duncan Renaldo, George Lewis, William Vaughn, Howard Banks, and Amarilla Morris. Released by Producers Releasing Corporation.
Parkyakarkus (1904-1958), born Harry Einstein in Boston, Massachusetts, was an American comedian, writer, and character actor known professionally as Harry Parke and other pseudonyms, most commonly Parkyakarkus. A specialist in Greek dialect comedy, he became famous as the Greek chef Nick Parkyakarkus on the Eddie Cantor and Al Jolson radio programs, and later on a program of his own. He appeared in eleven films (as Parkyakarkus or a close variant) from 1936 to 1945. He was also the father of comedians and actors Albert Brooks and Bob Einstein (who performed as Super Dave Osborne and as Marty Funkhouser in Curb Your Enthusiasm). He first worked as a newspaper reporter, but then moved into advertising for Boston's Hearst Newspapers. In his spare time, he enjoyed performing comedy routines. During 1924–1925, he became popular on radio as "The Bad Boy from a Good Home", doing comedy skits on Boston station WEEI. He also worked in advertising for the Taylor Furniture Company, where he managed its radio department. He subsequently continued in the advertising business at another Boston furniture store, Summerfield's, while performing dialect comedy for friends at parties. His friend, Boston bandleader Joe Rines, persuaded him to become a full-time comedian, and Einstein made an appearance on Rines' radio program. He created the Greek character of Nick Parkyakarkus for a skit on that show. His star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame bears his character's name instead of his own.
This film, set in WWII North Africa and staring a bunch of low-rent actors, is typical of the patriotic B-Movies churned out by the hundreds during the war years. Keep in mind the historical timeframe here. In early 1942, when this movie was filmed, the Germans were all over North Africa, battling with the British for several years. The American invasion was just being planned at the time. A patchwork affair fastened together by good wishes. Double-crossings, secret alliances, barroom brawls and a belly dancer keep the action going. Worth a look just to see Parkyakarkus in his prime.
