Why India Opposed the Creation of Israel Initially?

India became independent in 1947, and soon after, the state of Israel was created in 1948 following the partition of Palestine.

At that time, India opposed the creation of Israel, as Indian leaders believed that a country should not be created on the basis of religion.

When the UN Partition Plan for Palestine was proposed in 1947, India voted against it.
India also voted against Israel’s admission to the United Nations in 1949.

However, after Israel became a reality, India officially recognized Israel as a country in 1950, marking the beginning of formal relations.
