Merle Haggard - Honky Tonk Night Time Man

Here's the original version of this great song. Released on "Merle Haggard Presents His 30th Album" in 1974. I was watching the You Tube Skynyrd version, reading all of the commentary. This will clear up any question as to who "Roy" is (the great Roy Nichols, of course!). It amazes me that even in the Skynyrd box set they identify "sounds like Roy" from the Skynyrd version as pertaining to Roy Clark! I think this ranks with "Workin' Man Blues" as the Strangers' best performance. Listen to the bass line (someone named Johnny Meeks!), and Roy and Norman Hamlet's great solos (copied pretty closely by Skynyrd). I think Skynyrds' version is possibly the best-ever Hag cover, but it's one thing to do a great cover - it's another thing to create it in the first place! Enjoy...
