How to find a true spiritual teacher and what is so special about the student-teacher relationship? Spiritual teacher Gangaji speaks on this important topic and also shares her experiences with Advaita Master Papaji, who was not only the Guru of her, but also of Mooji.

Gangaji first explains what is important in student-teacher-relationship with a spiritual guru or spiritual teacher, ‘if you're in a committed relationship with a teacher you will go through some hellish moments, but you won't escape and in that non-escaping you will discover yourself more deeply.’ A guru’s role is to bring us to spiritual enlightenment / spiritual awakening, to realize our true nature which is consciousness / awareness. And because we are attached to our ego, our sense of personal identity, fear and other negative emotions will arise. But instead of running away, we face them and by that we get learn ourselves better.

According to Gangaji it is totally fine to try different teachers in order to find true spiritual advice and a spiritual mentor. Good and honest advice on the spiritual path is incredibly valuable and so it is fine if we experiment with ourselves and different teacher until we find one who is the right one. But during this search we should also take an honest look at ourselves and recognize whether we are running away from a true, committed disciple-guru relationship.

Gangaji also shares her experiences with Papaji. She had tried different teachings like Tibetan Buddhism and Zen Buddhism and Papaji was the one whom she recognized as her true Guru. But still doubt, fear in general and especially fear of dependence were present in her. She was afraid that – maybe – Papaji was like many other ‘fake’ gurus and tried to brainwash her. But she learned to trust him and finally realized her true nature as infinite consciousness / awareness.
