Ep2: Rebekah Wright, Barnes & Noble, Santa Rosa, CA on Bookstores + the Sharing Economy
September 2023: A Note from Actuary and Author Peter Neuwirth, FSA, FCA — I invite you to tune in for this month's episode of my podcast and video show, Money Mountaineering, where for 30 minutes, financial experts help us answer the question: What's your future worth?
This is Season 2 of the show, and we explore the Sharing Economy:
1. What we each consider as “assets” to live on comprises far more than our financial assets and real estate; but also includes our skills, knowledge, relationships, and things that we own that we don’t use all the time and can share with others.
2. Sharing is both financially efficient (cutting out middlemen and transaction costs) and more sustainable long term than spending down a finite pot of money.
3. A sharing economy requires “affinity” and happens best locally and in the real world. How and where it works and how scalable it is are the questions that I will explore in the upcoming interviews.
Meet this month's guest: Rebekah Wright, Bookstore Manager for Barnes and Noble in Santa Rosa, CA
Our topic: Books, bookstores, and the role they play in our world
Pete and Bekah discuss:
1. What is a bookstore's role in the sharing economy?
2. What does title curation in the bookstore look like, and how does it happen?
3. What is the relationship between the store and the author?
4. Why is censorship of books harmful?
5. How do we keep bookstores alive?
About our guest: Rebekah Wright, 42, Bookstore Manager for Barnes and Noble in Sonoma County. Bekah, a mother, writer/poet, believes everyone has a story to tell.
