Because this area survived both the Great Kanto Earthquake of the 1920s and the firebombing of WW2, Kyojima has a fascinating architecture that features old wooden rowhouses known as 'nagaya', allowing the area to retain a touch of the characteristic culture handed down from the Edo (old Tokyo) Samurai era. People living in the nagaya have a close-knit community, and some feature small shops and art spaces. Kyojima's artisan workshops produce crafts passed down through many generations. Kyojima also feels new in many ways, as artists and creatives make unique spaces through renovation and innovation. There is much to explore and so much potential! We would like to take you through Kyojima's intimate alleys and let you see it for yourself.
