Directed by Kane Parsons, Backrooms follows Clark, a struggling furniture store owner and former architect whose personal life and business are beginning to fall apart. After a series of unexplained electrical problems leads him into the basement of his showroom, Clark discovers a strange opening in the wall that should not exist.

Beyond that doorway is an enormous labyrinth of yellow wallpaper, fluorescent lights, empty hallways, impossible architecture, and rooms that seem to continue forever. Clark initially believes the discovery could finally give his life meaning, but the deeper he explores, the more the Backrooms begin reflecting pieces of his store, his memories, and the parts of himself he would rather avoid.

What's so unnerving is that the horror does not only come from what may be hiding around the next corner. The environment itself feels alive, constantly rebuilding reality through distorted memories, misplaced objects, strangely proportioned doors, and humanlike creatures that appear to be imperfect attempts at copying the people who enter.

Chiwetel Ejiofor brings desperation and emotional instability to Clark, while Renate Reinsve plays Mary, his therapist, who initially doubts his impossible story. When Clark disappears, Mary enters the Backrooms looking for him and finds herself trapped inside the same dimension that has already begun consuming his identity.

The film also expands the mythology of Kane Parsons’ original YouTube series through Async, a mysterious research organization studying the phenomenon without fully understanding what it is, where it came from, or why it continues creating faulty replicas of human memories.
