What Did These Ribbons Mean to German Soldiers? Uniforms and Decorations of World War II.

In photographs from World War II, you can see German soldiers and officers wearing mysterious red-and-black ribbons with white stripes on their tunic lapels. As a rule, these ribbons were very small and were attached near one of the buttons. What were they for, and what did they signify?
